ZWD: Inside chapter 5
Locked ourselves in the library with things that go bump.I actually went to the Central Arkansas Library Systems Main Library and stood on the main floor looking around to see if it could be done, locking oneself in there and safely hold down the fort so to speak. If you visit Little Rock you should go show them some love at the Central Library.
I don't know that two people could do it for real, especially with all the glass they have around. It certainly could not have been defended against humans. Zombies perhaps, but not people. I was betting that in a world where food was a high commodity people were not really thirsting for knowledge so it was going to be a very low priority on the scavenging scale. But at the same time to me knowledge seemed like a more valuable commodity in the longer run than food. You know, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him to fish and you feed him for life."
Our hero's knew they were ignorant and needed to change that fast if they were to survive. I'll admit at the time I was writing this I had been watching several of those survival show like Preppers and a bunch of survival videos on YouTube and I had seriously thought about incorporating a bunch of things like that into the story. I did a little with the dryer lint and I think I made mention of filtering water. But the plan got way out of control. I think I had a list of about twenty different urban survival things I was going to put in the story. In hind sight I'm glad I didn't.
Pay no attention to the dumb-ass behind the door, just look at me, baby. If you have read this far you know there is an incident in the library involving a fire exit and they trying to figure out the best way to get the zombie on the other side to a spot where they can kill it without killing themselves. I actually went through that exercise with a fire door, not at the library but somewhere else. I'm sure the security camera had fun with me messing with the door.
If you follow our hero's closely you will see that in their behavior they are adopting to the rules of the new world they have found themselves in. She more quickly than him. In fact she is usually a step or two ahead of him in the adaption of things. Later in the story she is much farther ahead of him but at this point they are about even since it has only been a few hours since they both decided to stop being victims and start being "proactive" in their survival. Their ignorance about the same and almost comical. I think the chapter shows the first signs of her starting to become the leader and tactician she end up as. Him not so much.
